I moved down to get away from the congestion of London, for the peace and open spaces of Dorset, so I can’t believe that HCC are now proposing that gravel pits and landfills should be built so close to peoples’ homes. I take my young children out at the weekends along the footpaths across Walkford Farm, and they stop and wave at the train drivers from the railway bridge, hoping they’ll hoot back. They love watching the birds and the rabbits and seeing how much the crops have grown in the fields. They also love going to the ‘Pick Your Own fields’ at Roeshot, where they eat the strawberries as they wander round. To me these are best reasons for the sites not going ahead. Children have less and less green spaces to walk in, and although I know we need some gravel, the main drive behind wanting to open these sites is the financial gain for the Gravel companies, at the expense of local people.
