Dorset County Council have listed a site at Roeshot for possible gravel extraction. This is in addition to the Hampshire gravel site for Roeshot, and could mean a giant ‘super site’ being created that extends from within 300 yards of Burton in the west, right across to the ‘Pick Your Own’ fields to the east. The ‘super site’ would compose 6.5 million tonnes of gravel and could well end up being extended further at a later date.

The link below is the official information from Dorset County Council, including the site map, but WRAGE have also listed our own reasons for objecting to the site below.

Dorset Council information on the Roeshot site -

MSADAS13Roeshot

WRAGE objects to Dorset’s proposed site at Roeshot because of the following grounds:-

  • The potential eventual size of the combined sites if both Hampshire’s and Dorset’s are successful
  • The site is in the Green Belt and contains farming land
  • There is a Site of Special Scientific Interest on the border with Burton Common
  • Archaeology potential of the site i.e. tumuli
  • Proximity to Residential Properties - especially Burton
  • Public footpaths cross the site
  • Watercourses could be contaminated, which lead to the River Mude
  • The site will affect the setting of the New Forest National Park and the main tourist ‘gateway’ to the Forest
  • There are many problems around the site access from the A35
  • The large and under estimated amount of gravel and in-fill lorries
  • Lorry journeys through the wider area, especially on the A337 (through Highcliffe) and A35
  • In-fill - The site is unsuitable for even household waste because of the high water table.
  • The unreasonable burden on our area given the number of other existing and proposed sites.
